Dolphins Release Brent Grimes

The Dolphins officially released cornerback Brent Grimes on Wednesday

The Miami Dolphins have cut ties with cornerback Brent Grimes with a formal release of the veteran on Wednesday.

Miami had approached the veteran CB about a contract restructuring and was rebuffed by Grimes. Days after successfully negotiating with Ndamukong Suh and Koa Misi, the Dolphins were not so lucky with Grimes. Without a restructured deal in place, a release was the only remaining viable option for the team.

By releasing Grimes, Miami opens up $6.5 in cap room which the team will need. In recent days, the Dolphins have taken on multiple contracts and have shuffled cap room around at a frenetic pace.

Grimes had some fine moments while on the field for Miami, but he also was indirectly involved in some off-the-field headlines. Grimes' wife Miko has been the subject of headlines during his tenure with the team. In December, those headlines involved quarterback Ryan Tannehill who referred to the situation with Mrs. Grimes at the time as a distraction.

Grimes tried to distance himself from the situation and clear up that any thoughts or comments from his wife, should not be considered the same as coming from him.

"We don’t speak the same things. That’s her. . . . My wife’s opinions are her opinions. They’re not my opinions. I really don’t understand why you ask me about my wife’s opinions. It’s not mine,” Grimes told the Miami Herald at the time.

While those moments may have led to some distractions, there is no disputing the impact Grimes had on the field itself. The CB was chosen for the Pro Bowl in all three of his seasons with Miami. Grimes tallied 13 interceptions while with the Dolphins and reached four in 2015 despite missing six games.
