"Of all the taxes impacting Floridians, property taxes are the most significant," DeSantis said. "I can tell you that when people talk to me about taxes, 99% talk about property taxes."

During the conference, DeSantis said he's hoping for a constitutional amendment to be placed on the 2026 Florida ballot that will allow for the elimination of property taxes.

DeSantis emphasized that he wants this tax relief to be placed on Florida homeowners and residents.

"I want Canadians tourists and and Brazilian tourists subsidizing the state and making it so Florida residents pay less taxes," he said. "I don't want to give Canadians a tax cut."

According to DeSantis, if the amendment passes, there would be approximately $1,000 in savings per household.

He said it is a better option than reducing the sales tax by 3/4ths of a percent.

The current sales tax in Florida is 6%.

Florida House Speaker Danny Perez’s proposal is to trim that down to 5.25%.
