Deerfield Beach Man in Critical Condition After Townhouse Fire

A BSO deputy suffered minor injuries while attempting to rescue the male resident before firefighters arrived.

A Deerfield Beach man is in critical condition after a townhouse fire this morning.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to reports of heavy smoke in the Tivoli Lakes community just before 8 a.m. The resident had already escaped the blaze. The man, who has not been identified, was rushed to Broward Health North and then airlifted to the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center. He sustained third degree burns over 30 percent of his body.

Fire officials rescued the man's dog from the first-floor unit and two residents off the balcony above. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to put out the blaze, which gutted the townhouse. Two other units also sustained smoke damage.

Four adult occupants have been displaced, and the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team is assisting them with temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
