A deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in SW Miami-Dade shut down traffic in both directions on Saturday night.

FHP confirmed on Sunday that there were two crashes. An initial crash involving a white SUV and gray sedan that happened in the Turnpike's southbound lanes near Bird Road -- causing both vehicles to become disabled and partially block the left lane.

The people involved in that crash then got out of the vehicles and while standing there, an ongoing pickup truck crashed into the gray sedan and two of the occupants, FHP confirmed.

Troopers said one person died at the scene while the other was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.

The Turnpike was closed throughout the preliminary investigation and traffic was diverted onto SW 8 Street, FHP added.
