Credit Union Finds New Home in High School

The student bankers will have a chance to be employed with the credit union as they begin college

The Dade County Federal Credit Union opened its doors at Booker T. Washington High School Tuesday and put the students in charge. Student Christopher Ferrer told NBC 6 South Florida that it was a good opportunity because he would like to become an accountant.

“These students are actually manning the credit union during lunch and after school,” said Principal William Aristide. “They have the opportunity to interact with their schoolmates, parents and people in the community.”

Student teller Chevon Williams said that in addition to a good opportunity, the opening is convenient for its users.

“When it’s open during lunch, you can come in, make a withdrawal, make a deposit, it’s real convenient so you don’t have to go too far to get your money,” Williams said.

Along with financial literacy, the program helps develop work readiness skills.

“The opportunity to put on their resumes that they have worked with a credit union, worked in a business, will also open up many doors for them,” said Lupe Diaz, the director of Schools of Choice in Miami-Dade County.

Public Military Academy Opens in Broward County

Student Christopher Ferrer agreed.

“So this is like the stepping stone, the primary objective is for me to get through and be an accountant,” he said.

Upon graduation, the bankers of Booker T. Washington could be employeed with the Dade County Federal Credit Union.
