>Here’s everything you need to know about getting vaccinated in Miami-Dade and Broward County, as well as vaccination options across the state.
What do I need to get vaccinated?
It is required to show proof of Florida residency to receive your first dose of the vaccine. This can be a copy of a valid Florida driver's license, or a copy of a valid Florida identification card. Seasonal residents are also eligible to receive vaccinations. Click here for more information.
Officials recommend checking social media pages for the latest information regarding open appointments. Miami-Dade County, for example, regularly posts on Twitter when windows open for vaccinations. (Click here for Miami-Dade County's Twitter, click here for Broward County's Twitter.)
What vaccines are available in Florida?
The state of Florida is currently administering the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, as well as the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
In clinical trials, Moderna's vaccine reported 94.1% effectiveness at preventing COVID-19 in people who received both doses. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was said to be 95% effective.
The CDC reports the J&J/Janssen vaccine was 66.3% effective in clinical trials at preventing COVID-19 illness in people who had no evidence of prior infection two weeks after receiving the vaccine.
Florida briefly paused use of the J&J vaccine after reports of blood clots in some individuals across the country. The pause was lifted on April 26th after a new safety review was conducted by the Federal Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
Who has priority on vaccination appointments?
During the initial rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, elderly residents and those with underlying health conditions were prioritized for vaccinations. As more supply of the vaccine became available, that pool expanded to include other age groups, and individuals over the age of 18 are now eligible to receive the vaccine in the state of Florida.
The Pfizer vaccine has been approved for individuals ages 12-17. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and complete a vaccine screening and consent form.
Can I pre-register for a vaccination appointment?
Yes. State health officials have launched a new system where eligible residents can pre-register for a vaccination appointment and be notified when appointments in their area become available.
After entering your county of residence and contact information, you will be contacted by phone, text, or e-mail when appointments become available, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Visit myvaccine.fl.gov to sign up. Additionally, each county has a designated phone number that individuals can call and pre-register if they do not have Internet access. The complete list of numbers by county can be found here.
