A man suspected in a carjacking in Pembroke Pines was killed after an exchange of gunfire with officers in Miramar late Tuesday night, police said.

Police identified the suspect Wednesday as 28-year-old Jean N. Printemps, a Miramar resident.

The incident began with an armed carjacking of a silver Honda with four people inside around 10:40 p.m. in the 1400 block of Southwest 97th Avenue, Miramar Police spokeswoman Tania Rues said.

"He banged on the glass with the gun and he wanted our money, jewelry and our phones," said 21-year-old victim Kadeem McGowan.

The friends had no money, so Printemps smashed their phones so they couldn't call police, McGowan said. He said the girl in the seat behind him hid her phone.

According to McGowan, Printemps ordered the friends in and out of the car several times. He grew frustrated and  threatened them.

"He tapped the gun on my chest to let me know," McGowan said. "He says, 'I'll shoot you. I'll kill you. Don't try anything.'"

Eventually, said McGowan, Printemps told the group to run away from the car before jumping in and taking off.

Pembroke Pines Police issued an alert to be on the lookout for the Honda Tuesday night, and Miramar Police spotted the car in the area of Southwest 101st Avenue and Pembroke Road, Rues said.

At some point, the officers were forced to open fire, Rues said.

"Two of our officers found a vehicle matching that description, shots were fired, the individual is deceased," she said.

Police later said a gun was found in the car the suspect had stolen.

Neighbors said they heard multiple shots in the area around 11 p.m.

"They came so fast," 78-year-old Rolla Magliore said of the gunshots.

"At least he's off the streets," Yulanda Rini said of the suspect. "Unfortunately someone lost their life, but at least he's not running around hurting other people."
