A 22-day old baby badly injured in a hit and run in Miami is on a miraculous road to recovery. The family of that baby, who is now 4-months old, shared their story for the first time since the February crash.
Little Elias Amaya nearly died when a white minivan slammed into the family’s car on Southwest 7th Street and 17th Avenue. Miami police said the impact of the crash sent the newborn flying out of the car’s back window.
"I know it's a miracle when he got to the hospital, you know, we never thought he was going to survive it,” said Pedro Amaya, the baby’s uncle.
Pedro says little Elias suffered permanent brain damage. The baby’s mother had just taken him out of the car seat to feed him moments before the crash, police said.
Now, Elias has a nurse who cares for him around the clock. The baby’s father, Jose Amaya said little Elias has to take medicine to stop frequent seizures.
The family now wants justice. They are demanding that the hit and run driver comes forward.
"I actually never want to see that person, you know, but we want him to respond,” Pedro said.
