Authorities Identify Man Killed in Seven Mile Bridge Crash

Floyd Devos, 79, died after his vehicle was struck head-on by a Nissan heading the other way Wednesday night: FHP

Authorities have identified the driver who was killed and two other people who were injured in an accident on the Florida Keys' Seven Mile Bridge Wednesday night.

Floyd Devos, 79, who was driving southbound, died after his vehicle was struck head-on at about 8:50 p.m. by one driven by Xavier Ycaza, 23, who was heading north but drove into the southbound lane, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

After the impact Ycaza’s 2013 Nissan slid north, spun and struck the bridge’s east wall before catching on fire, the FHP said in a report.

Devos’ 1999 Chevy slid south and struck the bridge’s west wall before it came to a rest on the wall facing southeast. A passenger in his vehicle, 76-year-old Nancy Devos, and Ycaza were flown to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, and Ycaza underwent surgery, according to the FHP.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash for Ycaza, and charges are pending, the FHP said. It wasn't immediately known whether Ycaza, of Golden Beach, has an attorney.

Floyd and Nancy Devos are from Grand Rapids, Michigan, the FHP said.

The accident shut down traffic in both directions on the bridge for hours.
