A shotgun-wielding suspect injured an officer who responded to a domestic violence report Saturday. Officers then found two dead people, a dead pit bull, several rifles and what appeared to be an explosive device.
In a Saturday afternoon press conference, Coconut Creek Police Department Chief Butch Arnel said a domestic disturbance was reported at about 7 a.m. at the 4200 block of Northwest 57th Drive in the Coral Pointe subdivision.
"The report we received initially was that a female was banging on the neighbor's door, asking for help," Arnel said.
Andrew Renna, a 30-year-old, 4-half-year veteran of the police department, arrived at the scene in less than a minute. The suspect immediately began shooting at Renna's vehicle, Arnel said.
Renna was struck with multiple rounds but was able to accelerate down the street, where was met by other first responders who helped transport him to Broward Health North.
When approached by numerous officers at an intersection, the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Jason Roseman, dropped his shotgun and surrendered.
Arnel said his officer suffered a punctured lung and is in a lot of pain, but he's expected to be OK.
"We feel very lucky about his condition," Arnel said.
As part of protocol following a report of an officer shot, law enforcement agencies throughout Broward County were called to assist. That's when officers from a multi-agency SWAT team went inside to investigate the home where the incident originated.

They found a dead person. They found a dead pit bull. In the second floor, they found several rifles and ammunition. In the garage, they found "what appeared to be an IED – an improvised explosive device," Arnel said.
"This looked legitimate," Arnel said, adding that officials then called in a bomb squad, which determined the possible IED was a prop.
The carnage was not limited to inside the home. A woman was found dead on the driveway next door. At the driveway of another home, a man was found injured.
That man is in "extremely critical condition," according to Arnel.
The identities of those killed and the man who was injured have not yet been released.
Roseman's criminal record includes aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony battery charges.
A resident who was near the scene said that he's been living in that area for nearly three weeks. He thought it was a quiet area.
"I guess nowhere is safe anymore," Robert Robinson said.
Coconut Creek borders the city of Parkland, where 17 people – mostly teenage students – were shot dead in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy on Feb. 14, 2018.
