Police have made an arrest after a fight between two men caused a scene of chaos at Dolphin Mall Saturday night, sources told NBC 6.
David Andrew Smith, 31, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, Sweetwater Police Chief Placido Diaz.
The fight, which apparently started on the courtyard by the mall’s main entrance, escalated when people at the mall started panicking, sources told NBC 6.
Cell phone video showed the chaotic scene, as panicked people ran out into the parking lots.
NBC 6 spoke with several people who were inside the mall and were convinced they heard gun shots after they were directed to take cover.
However, officials confirmed to NBC 6 that there was not a shooting during the incident.
"I have talked to Sweetwater Police. Basically, there is no shots fired," said Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz. "Apparently, there was a fight and people started panicking and things got out of control."
Several units with Sweetwater Police and Miami-Dade Police responded shortly before 9 p.m., including armed officers who were actively securing the scene.
