South Florida is waking up to near record low temperatures Wednesday morning as a cold front that arrived Tuesday afternoon has people grabbing for their sweaters and a hot beverage.
Temperatures near the coast barely got above 50 degrees while some inland areas saw morning temps dip into the low 40s – a difference over 20 degrees in some areas from just one day before.
Miami recorded a morning low of 51 degrees while Fort Lauderdale came in with 48 degrees.
The cool weather will stick around for much of the day with high temps not expected to break the mid-60s, which would be the coldest since January of this year.
Officials in Broward County declarextended a cold weather emergency through Thursday morning and opened special shelters in two locations – the Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale and the Outreach Center in Hollywood.
Temperatures for Thursday morning are expected to be just as cold in the morning – again with lows in the upper 40s in some locations – before warming up to the lower 70s by the afternoon. Friday will see the cooler weather start to disappear with lows in the mid 60s and highs in the upper 70s.
