A 15-year-old student was arrested and another was hospitalized after getting into a fight in the hallway of Coconut Creek High School.
The fight, caught on cellphone video, happened at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.
At one point in the video, one of the students picks up the other and body slams him to the ground. The student doesn't move and blood is coming out of the side of his head.
Coconut Creek police said they arrested a student and is charging him with aggravated battery. NBC 6 is not identifying him because he is a minor.
The victim, who is also 15, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said he was conscious and alert. He was later released.
Cynthia Williams, the victim's mother, told NBC 6 she was angry that no security guard or adult had run out to stop the fight, especially since she said it took place in front of an administrative office.
Her son needed three staples to the back of his head, and stiches.
Williams claimed she was not sure what had started the fight, but knew that the students had gotten into two other fights earlier that day, one in the cafeteria.
Tamar Murphy, the defendant's mother, was also unaware of why the fight took place. She told NBC 6 she felt terrible for the injuries sustained by the victim, and that her son is remorseful.
Murphy's son is being detained for 21 days in Broward's Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of aggravated battery. He has not been formally charged by a state attorney.
"The bleeding and everything, that’s the most extreme one that we’ve had but it’s almost kind of normal, there’s so much drama coming out of the school, and that’s almost normal for every high school," said student Ashley Benitez.
