Brightline Train Hits Pedestrian in Wilton Manors

The Wilton Manors Police Department said a pedestrian was hit by a Brightline high-speed train on Thursday.

Fire officials said a man purposely laid down parallel between the tracks before the Brightline train approached.

The unidentified person was transported to the Broward Health Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials said the crossing gates were down and the warning lights were activated at the time of the incident, but a Brightline official said the incident did not take place at a crossing.

"Based on witness reports, this was an intentional act by an individual who laid on the tracks before the train approached. We appreciate the work of our team and first responders who acted quickly to remove him safely," Brightline said in a statement.

Several people have been killed or injured since service began for the high-speed rail Jan. 13.

The over-$1-billion system is planned to expand south to Miami and north to Orlando in the coming months or years.

After the recent deaths, one citizen's group along the Treasure Coast doesn’t want to train going north of its current location.
