Mother Charged With Murder After Allegedly Tossing Child in Tampa River

A mother who authorities say threw her young daughter into a river in Tampa Thursday has been charged with murder after the girl's body was found in the water.

Tampa Police officials said officers responded to a call of a child being thrown off a bridge at the Hillsborough River around 4 p.m.

A dive team also responded and found the body of the 4-year-old girl about 75 feet from shore around 4:30 p.m., officials said. The girl, identified by police as Je'Hyrah Daniels, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The girl's mother was found nearby the scene and was taken into custody.

Police say Shakayla Denson, 26, had stolen a Nissan Altima from an auto repair shop before she drove to the Hillsborough River with her daughter.

She waded roughly halfway into the river before she tossed the child and began wading out, police said.

Denson faces charges of felony first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and grand theft auto.
