A Miami high school student accused of trying to perform a wrestling move on his principal bonded out of jail early Friday morning after he was arrested on a battery charge, police said.
Gianny Sosa, 18, was arrested Wednesday at Miami Southridge Senior High School, a report from Miami-Dade Police said.
The report said Sosa attempted a move called an "RKO" on the principal, Humberto Miret, in a hallway. The incident was captured on a school surveillance camera, the report said.
"What I did, it wasn't intentional. I wasn't trying to hurt nobody," Sosa said shortly after his release, saying he had joked with the principal before. "I understand he had to use some force cause he might be worried, but the situation escalated when he took me into a private classroom with no cameras and continued to use force."
The incident was also captured on cellphone footage. In one video, Sosa yells "RKO" as he appears to grab Miret's neck.
Multiple administrators and security responded and Sosa was uncooperative, the report said. He was later arrested and booked into jail, where he was held on $750 bond Thursday, records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
"It's unfortunate that anyone would instigate a situation for self-promotion that could bring harm to others. Instances of disruptive and threatening behavior will be handled swiftly and result in severe consequences," Miami-Dade County Public Schools said in a statement. "In addition to an arrest, the student's lack of judgment will result in disciplinary actions in accordance with our Code of Student Conduct."
Sosa's family defended him on Thursday, saying it was a joke gone wrong.
"He did tell all of us he was just going to hug the principal. He wasn’t going to harm him in any way and if he really wanted to harm the principal in any way he would have to do the RKO move from a distance. Like you just can’t walk up to somebody and grab him by the neck and drop him," sister Camila Sosa said.
