Three workers have died after the scaffolding they were on collapsed at a TV transmitter tower in Miami Gardens Wednesday, officials said.
The workers were on the scaffolding, also known as a gin pole, installing a new antenna on the tower at 501 Northwest 207th Street when the scaffolding collapsed, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said.
Miami Gardens Police officials said the workers fell to their death from the tower, which is about 1,000 feet high. The workers were near the top of the tower, likely falling about 900 feet, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
Footage showed the damaged scaffolding on the ground with the bodies covered by yellow tarps.
"When I saw the guy on top of it, the cord was hanging down. I went in the house and I heard the noise. It sounded like the winds from the hurricane, the cord ripping," said Eric Garner, who lives near the tower. "I heard the boom, I saw the debris fly up in the air and I immediately called 911."
Kevin Barber, president of Tower King II based in Cedar Hill, Texas, confirmed to NBC 6 that the three workers were employees of his company. The identities of the workers weren't released.
The TV tower is shared by WSVN and WPLG.
