Two teenagers are in critical condition after the car they were in crashed into a guardrail, flipped over and plunged into a Sweetwater canal overnight, a city spokeswoman said.
Sweetwater Police said they arrived within five minutes of getting a call about the accident at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, with three officers rescuing the driver of the black Infiniti G35 through his partially open window.
A Sweetwater detective and two Miami-Dade firefighters “used air tanks to go back into the canal and pull the fourth man out” from the back seat, city spokeswoman Michelle Hammontree-Garcia said.
Both men were resuscitated and are in critical condition at Kendall Regional Medical Center, she said.
A total of four 17-year-olds were in the car when it crashed at the northeast corner of the intersection of NW 117th Avenue and NW 25th Street, and two were able to get out on their own and call for help.
