An 18-year-old driver was killed overnight in a car crash at SW 52nd Street and SW 87th Avenue, authorities said.
The five other people involved in the collision between a Honda Accord and Chevy Blazer in southwest Miami-Dade were rushed to Kendall Regional Medical Center with injuries.
Teen driver Johana Arias, who had four passengers in her mother’s Honda, pulled up to the intersection and was turning onto SW 87th Avenue when the Chevy, heading southbound, came up to the intersection and T-boned the car at 1:22 a.m., Florida Highway Patrol Trooper John Carvalho said. The Chevy had the right of way, according to the trooper.
In the teen driver’s final conversation with her mother hours before the crash, her mother asked her to come home because it was late, Carvalho said.
All six people were trapped for some time after the accident, a firefighter said at the scene.
“We had to use the jaws of life in two separate vehicles to remove all six of them. It was about a 20-to-30-minute lengthy extrication, but we were able to get all six victims out of the vehicles,” said Lt. Rafael Fernandez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Arias was pronounced dead on the scene.
The woman driving the Blazer, 45-year-old Noemi Hernandez, broke her leg. She and the others taken to the hospital are expected to survive, authorities said.
They identified two of the Honda's passengers as Korrinne Rabassa, 18, and Tony Rodriguez, 19. The other two passengers have not been identified.
