12 Miami Police K-9s to Get Bulletproof Vests

Twelve of the Miami Police Department's K-9s will soon have bulletproof vests, thanks to donation that will cover the costs.

Currently only two of the city's 18 police dogs have bulletproof vests.

El Nuevo Herald reports PetArmor and the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K-9s are donating the money to cover the vests, which cost about $1,000 each.

Officials say three Florida K-9s were among the 18 that died in action in the United States last year. The K-9s were from Miami Gardens, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Leon County.

Miami uses K-9s to detect narcotics, explosives and currency. The 12 K-9s will receive training to get used to the vests.
