A single car crash on Florida's Turnpike early Monday morning killed one person and sent another to the hospital.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene shortly after 3:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the Turnpike at Exit 49B near Hollywood. The vehicle, a BMW I-8, went off the road, down an embankment and flipped after hitting a concrete drain.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Jamal Rodney of Sunrise, was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The 28-year-old passenger was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
FHP is investigating what caused the driver to go off the road but said speed possibly played a role.
FHP reopened the off-ramp onto Hollywood Boulevard shortly after 9:15 a.m., nearly six hours after the crash.
