Chernéy Amhara is an Emmy® award-winning journalist who joined NBC6 in February 2022. She currently anchors the station’s weekend morning newscasts, NBC6 News Today at 6am and 8:30am on Saturdays and NBC6 News Today at 7am and 9am on Sundays, from the station’s Miramar-based studios. She is also a weekday reporter.
Before joining NBC6, Amhara worked as weekend anchor and reporter at WISN-12 News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she covered several national stories, including the Milwaukee Bucks Championship run, the Waukesha Christmas Parade Tragedy, the police shooting of Jacob Blake and unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. While there, Amhara also help found Wisconsin’s first chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, where she worked to diversify local newsrooms.
Amhara has also worked in Las Vegas, where she covered the high-profile trial of David Copperfield, the Las Vegas Raiders move, and Las Vegas mass shooting tragedy. She also won an Emmy®-award for her in-depth coverage of Las Vegas gang culture.
She started her career working for stations in Charlottesville, Virginia and Los Angeles, California.
Amhara studied journalism with a Spanish-language journalism emphasis, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication at California State University, Northridge
Amhara comes from a multi-racial Caribbean family and spent her early years living in St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica, before moving to California as a child. The Jamaican-American journalist is thrilled to be a part of South Florida’s diverse community and tell stories that impact our area.
In her spare time, Amhara loves to cook and loves to travel. She will typically take a cooking class whenever she visits new countries or regions. Amhara even has an Instagram page @ChefNCher dedicated to her cooking.
