A man who was shot while driving in Opa-locka was taken to the hospital after his car crashed into a tree and he jumped into a canal, officials said.
The unidentified man was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix and was being chased by two other cars, a late model gray or silver BMW SUV and a silver Toyota Corolla, when he was struck in the back by a bullet at about 2:30 p.m., Opa-locka authorities said.
When he was struck, he hit a tree near the intersection of NW 24th Avenue and 139th Street, officials said. That's when the victim got out of his car, jumped into a canal and swam across, according to authorities.
When he got to the other side of the canal, he collapsed behind a home, officials said. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical, but stable condition.
Police did not immediately release further details.
