It's called dragging the field on a tractor... not plowing the field on a "sand zambonie."
That's just one of the things you'll learn hanging out with Miami Dade College's Lady Sharks softball team. They can also teach you a thing or two about how to catch a grounder or a pop fly, make contact with a ball and slide into home plate. Maybe that's why they are playing for a National Title in Utah this week.
Until just recently, they were ranked #1 in the entire country. Sure, the skills are what earned the ladies a winning record so that they qualified, but when you chat with the players and their coaches, you realize that they are more than team players by chance - but a family by choice.
The bond off the field is part of what has made this team so successful on the field. The Sharks made it to the championship back in 2007, but finished 5th place. If you ask head Coach Carlos Caro, though, there is no other option -- the Sharks are in it to win it. Having home run hitter Kristen Exposito, who broke the home run record, and star pitchers Erika Bennett and Geovanny Nuñez on the team certainly makes victory attainable.
While many of the players represent schools from South Florida, these ladies have come to Miami from all over the country and the world. Vivian Morimoto, Veronika Fukunishi and Simone Suetsugu come straight from Brazil. Geovanny Nuñez from the Dominican Republic, Erika Bennet from Sierra Vista, Arizona and Rebecca Hall from Vancouver, Canada.
The National Championship Tournament takes place May 20th-22nd, and the Lady Sharks won their first game 7-0 on Thursday.
