One person died after a Tri-Rail train hit a bicyclist Monday afternoon near Dania Beach.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said the bicyclist rode itno the path of the Tri-Rail train which then hit him. The accident closed Stirling Road near the tracks and shut down an exit ramp from Interstate 95 onto Stirling Road.
Authorities identified the victim as 53-year-old Jerry Smith, of Plantation.
All of the safety equipment including the lights, bells and gates were working at the intersection but Smith "failed to yield," BSO officials said.
Tri-Rail’s train was also stopped at Sterling Road as a result of the accident. It was the second problem Tri-Rail faced Monday.
The rail service was also suspended between Deerfield Beach Station and Boca Raton Station due to an accident on I-95.
