A taxi driver was killed and four others were injured in a crash in Dania Beach Monday morning, authorities said.
The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. when the taxi, which was headed southbound on Federal Highway, collided with a pickup truck that was heading westbound on Sheridan Street, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
The taxi driver, identified as Frantz Joseph, 53, of North Miami, and two other occupants of the taxi as well as the man and woman who were in the truck were all taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, the BSO said.
"He was pronounced dead at the hospital after being transported, the male and female passenger in the cab and the male and female passenger in the pickup truck were all transported to Memorial Regional where they are currently being treated for their injuries," BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said.
The conditions of Jessica Johnson, 20, of Eustis and Jesse Johnson, 22, of Pompano Beach – who were in the taxi – and the truck's occupants Sheena Rogers, 28, of Miami and Emmanuel Bruce, 37, of Cutler Bay were unknown.
The cab was destroyed in the crash and came to a rest on a concrete fixture and shrubbery. The truck was also badly damaged and wound up in a nearby parking lot.
"If you just look at the images of this accident you can tell they are all very lucky to be alive this morning," Concepcion said.
Authorities haven't said what may have caused the crash. The identities of the victims haven't been released.
The incident had the intersection closed in all directions as detectives investigated the crash. The intersection was later reopened to traffic.
