Six-year-old David Narcisse is proud to be a big brother.
His mother gave birth to a healthy baby girl in May, but passed away a week later from complications. Then not too long after, his father, Sylvio Narcisse, lost one of his jobs.
“It was hard for me because I didn’t know how I was going to tell him, but as I said before, there were certain things I didn’t expect from the school,” the father said.
School counselors at David Lawrence Junior Center worked with David Narcisse and his father to help break the news to the kindergartener. He hasn’t missed a day of school since the tragedy.
“Once the father came and spoke to me about what had happened, I sent an email to the faculty and staff at the school telling them the situation at the school and we had this overwhelming response,” said kindergarten teacher Maureen Thomson.

The school raised over $1,800 to support the Narcisse family and has scheduled two upcoming fundraisers for them as well. On June 5 the school will host a softball game against the North Miami Police Department and on June 7 there will be a charity dinner in South Beach at the De Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean restaurant.

Times are much harder for the family, but David Narcisse and his dad are still holding on to hope.
“I don’t think that I’m going to find anyone like that anymore, but she’s still going to be in my heart, especially when I look at the baby,” Sylvio Narcisse said.
