Police are investigating after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed near a Miami elementary school Sunday.
Witnesses reported hearing gunfire near Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School on Northwest 4th Court and 20th Street around 3:30 p.m. Crime scene investigators responded and found the victim, Pedro Joaquin Uriarte, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends of Uriarte said the teen was shot as he was walking with his mother, when someone tried to steal his headphones.
Uriarte was a student at Miami Jackson Senior High School, friends said.
Police said they are searching for clues as to the motive in the shooting.
"There were a lot of people out here so we need the community's input at this point," Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said.
