New Sketch Released of Suspect in 2016 Killing of Mother in North Lauderdale

Nearly three years after a mother was killed and her son injured in a shooting at their North Lauderdale home, authorities are releasing a new sketch of the suspect in the hopes of solving the case.

The crime happened in the early morning hours of March 28, 2016 at the home of Candice McKinney at 1165 Cove Lake Road.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said McKinney, 35, and her 18-year-old son, Kareem Barnett, were both found shot at the home around 12:30 a.m. McKinney was declared dead at the scene, while Barnett was hospitalized but survived. A second child was found unharmed in the home.

On Tuesday, BSO released a new sketch of the suspect, who is believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, about 6-foot and 215 pounds. Homicide detectives suspect he may have had help.

"This person that committed this crime or persons are dangerous individuals, we don't want them to do this to anyone else. So us putting it in the media and trying to get more leads in the case to bring it to a resolution is a major concern of ours," BSO Sgt. Kevin Forsberg said.

A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
