Mother and Child Seriously Injured in 2-Car Crash: Cops

Police said the two were taken to separate hospitals in serious condition.

A mother and her 5-year-old child were injured in a two-car crash on Red Road and SW 4rd Street, police said.

The child was taken to Miami Children's Hospital in serious condition and the mother was taken to Ryder Trauma Center, also in serious condition, according to Miami Police.

The black Toyota Scion the mother and child were in was travelling eastbound on SW 4th Street when it collided with a white Ford Escape that was travelling northbound on 57th Avenue, police said. The Escape sustained front-end damage, while the Scion The black Toyota Scion ended up wrapped around an electrical post at the intersection.

As Miami Fire Rescue crews extricated the mother from the wreckage, a neighbor stepped in to help the child. Maidel Trujillo and a friend held the five-year-old's head to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

"She looked very, very bad," Trujillo said.

She said the child was screaming for help.

"I don't know what to think," Trujillo said. "I'm in shock."

The driver of the Escape remained on scene.

No further information was immediately released.
