Miami Police Officer Convicted in ID Theft Scam

A Miami police officer has been convicted of stealing 1,000 identities from a department database to collect fraudulent income tax refunds.

The Miami Herald reported Friday that 28-year-old Malinsky Bazile collected $140,000 in the scam between 2011 and 2012.

Bazile had been with the department since 2008. He was taken into custody immediately after his conviction Thursday.

The federal court jury took less than an hour to return its verdict. Another Miami officer, Vital Frederick, is standing trial separately. His jury is expected to begin deliberations Friday.
