A Miami man was sentenced to death Thursday in the killing of 80-year-old Severina "Lola" Fernandez.
Victor Guzman, 40, received a death sentence for stabbing Fernandez 58 times in 2000, according to a sentencing order from the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida.
According to the order, Fernandez would go outside to get the newspaper every day. She would then go inside and eat some ice cream while completing the crossword puzzle.

On Dec. 9, 2000, Fernandez went outside to get the newspaper at about 4:30 p.m., says the report. When neighbors visited her apartment around 6:30 p.m., they found her lying on her bed, stabbed and bruised, with her clothes ripped off and her underwear around her ankles, the order said.
The order says Guzman will be taken to the Florida State Prison and be kept in confinement until the date of his execution is set.
