Miami-Dade Police are investigating a shooting that reportedly started as a burglary.
It happened around 5:40 p.m. Thursday in the 7200 block of Northwest 19th Avenue near Northwest 72nd Street in Miami.
According to police, the 54-year-old homeowner has a surveillance system and was alerted by the company that the alarm system went off. She wasn't home at the time and arrived before police.
"She was checking the home herself when she observed a male exiting the rear. There was a struggle and shots were fired," said Det. Dan Ferrin with MDPD.
The intruder has been identified as 17-year-old Trevon Slick Johnson. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
"Right now, she's a little distraught but she's being cooperative and talking to our detectives," said Det. Ferrin.
This incident brings a reminder from law enforcement to the public. If you find someone on your property: "Have the police make that confrontation. That's what we are here for," Ferrin said.
Johnson's cousin described him as a loving teen, who didn't cause any trouble.
"Everybody's going to have their own story. She's going to have her side, he has his side, but he's dead, so he can't talk," said Sharika Hardy, cousin. "It's just devastating, it's our first time ever losing a family member so close to us and young. It's crazy, it's still so unbelievable."
