Homestead Could Host Huge Airshow in 2012

If greenlighted, the show could bring in Super Bowl-sized dollars

Eric Mendelson showed off the high tech gear Wednesday that his Hollywood aircraft parts company produces to an international crowd of aircraft makers and companies. He is one of more than 8,000 members of the industry on South Beach for the Aviation Week Magazine trade show.

Now, there's an ever bigger trade show on the horizon.

“If we had this show here, we would be able to showcase our products to the world and be able to get the South American visitors here,” said Medelson. “And it would be great high paying permanent jobs.”

It would be called the Miami International Airshow, and it would be held at the Homestead Air Reserve Base every other year.

”When they’re here for the air show, they see our facilities. They get impressed and they want to buy stuff and that creates opportunities and jobs,” said Mendelson.

Economic development group The Beacon Counsil said the show would bring money in like the Super Bowl — up to $250 million and produce hundreds or possibly thousands of full and part time jobs to improve the roads, sewer and water lines in Homestead and fill thousands into hotels and restaurants.

”We are telling the story about an event that is going to be very exciting and that is to put a major international air show at the beginning of November 2012,” Beacon Council President Frank Nero said, comparing it to major air shows like the Paris Airshow.

The Miami-Dade Commission will vote on the show May 3rd. A green light would give $7 million for improvements to Homestead Air Reserve Base and open the door for the airshow and the jobs that come with it.
