Authorities were investigating a fatal fire at a community in Deerfield Beach Thursday.
The fire was reported at 239 Newport 0 at Century Village, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said. "First arriving units told me that they had heavy fire in the back bedroom and porch area of the apartment it's on the second floor," said Mike Jachles, BSO Fire Rescue.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue quickly responded from their station less than a mile away and put out the fire in about 15 minutes, however, during a secondary search they found someone dead inside the apartment.
"It's tragic to see a fire death any time and let alone at the beginning of the new year. This is our first fire fatality in our county," Jachles said.
Residents from 8 apartments will be displaced due to loss of power and possible water damage, officials said.
Authorities have not released any information on the victim.
