A South Florida mom finally got the opportunity to meet the men and women who saved her baby.
Elissa Hilt and her husband Anthony wanted to have their baby at home in Coconut Creek, with midwife Mary Harris presiding over her care. But during the delivery last month, baby Kayla was coming out feet first.
"That's a baby that needs to be born in the hospital if possible," Harris said.
She almost got Kayla out, but she became stuck.
"Her left arm was behind the head," Harris said. "So I couldn't get my hand up there. My fingers weren't long enough to really get the force."
That's when the decision was made to call the Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Department, and (title) David Nyenbrink undertook the task of freeing baby Kayla.
"I was able to go in there, re-positioned her and rotating her, allowing her arm to come free," Nyenbrink said.

Kayla came out unconscious, and responders worked for over a minute to resuscitate the newborn. Finally, she began to cry.
"When she started whimpering, I put her on my chest and she started to cry," Elissa Hilt said. "It was the best feeling in the world."
