FAMU Will Have Hazing Committee Meetings Open To Public

The trustees voted 8-2 on Friday to make the school's new anti-hazing committee an advisory panel

Florida A&M University trustees are changing the mission of the school's anti-hazing committee and forcing it to meet publicly.

The trustees voted 8-2 on Friday to make the school's new anti-hazing committee an advisory panel.

This is a turnabout from just a week ago. Last week trustees voted to make the group a "fact finding" panel so it would be exempt from state requirements for public meetings.

But the decision to let the committee meet privately came under fire from Gov. Rick Scott and others.

The chairman of the anti-hazing committee warned that members may resign if the group was forced to follow Florida's strict open meetings and public records law.

FAMU set up the panel in the wake of the death of drum major Robert Champion.
