Coast Guard to Look at Jetty in Jose Fernandez Boat Crash

U.S. Coast Guard officials say they'll examine lighting on the Miami Beach jetty involved in a boat crash that killed Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two other men last month.

Rear Admiral Paul Thomas said in a letter this week to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio that the Coast Guard is commissioning a new analysis of the north and south jetties at the entrance to a channel that runs past the southern end of Miami Beach. The letter says an analysis performed last November found that aids to navigation in the area met boaters' needs.

Fernandez's crash remains under investigation.

The National League Rookie of the Year in 2013 and a two-time All-Star, Fernandez was a baseball star known for his exuberant personality and style of play.
