A Broward Sheriff's Office captain charged in connection with a traffic incident has resigned, officials said.
Capt. William Jackson, the former district chief for North Lauderdale, is facing a misdemeanor charge of resisting/obstructing a police officer without violence, the Broward State Attorney's Office said Wednesday.
Jackson submitted his resignation Tuesday, citing "serious health issues," according to his resignation form.
According to a Coconut Creek Police report, Jackson and his girlfriend were following each other in separate vehicles back in May when they were pulled over after at least one of them ran a red light.
Jackson became verbally aggressive with an officer before leaving the scene after he had been instructed to stay in his vehicle, the report said.
Jackson, who had been suspended with pay last month, is expected to appear in court in July. It was unknown if he has an attorney.
