Broward Judge: Red Light Tix Unconstitutional

A Broward County judge says police officers shouldn't bother wasting ink on tickets for red light runners.

Judge Fred Berman ruled May 31 that tickets for running red lights are unconstitutional when issued by officers because the fine is higher than those issued by red light cameras.

Camera-issued tickets are $158, while officer-issued citations are around $260. Tickets from officers also impose points on drivers licenses.

According to Berman, the tickets violate the U.S. and Florida's Constitution's equal protection provisions.

But Berman's ruling doesn't mean drivers can start blowing through red lights, since the law hasn't changed yet. Cops and cameras can still legally issue tickets.

The Florida Attorney general is expected to appeal Berman's ruling.
