Authorities are investigating after a man's body was found inside a car that was discovered submerged in a Davie canal Thursday morning.
The discovery was made in the canal in the 100 block of Orange Drive. A man said he spotted it and called 911 around 9 a.m.
"It just jumped right out at me," said the man, who didn't want to be identified. "I knew what it was right away."
Davie Police Sgt. Ed Smith said a Broward Sheriff's Office diver would remove the body from the white Lexus sedan. The victim was later identified as 50-year-old Carlos Mena.
"It's definitely a tragedy," Smith said. "Our homicide investigators will do everything that they can to determine exactly what happened and be able to give the family closure."
A police sharpshooter were also keeping watch while the diver was in the water after gators were spotted nearby.
Smith said Mena's car went off the road, struck a guardrail and went into the canal. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner's office.
