Animal Sacrifices at Sunrise Slaughter Farm: Animal Rights Group

A property in Sunrise that operated as an illegal slaughter farm where animal sacrifices were made and more than 300 animals were being held without food and water has led to at least one arrest, according to a South Florida animal rights group.

Kalito Jones, 61, was arrested Sunday multiple charges of animal cruelty and unlawful confinement or abandonment of animals.

According to the Animal Recovery Mission, or ARM, Jones was arrested after they received an anonymous tip about horrific conditions in which animals were being held on the property at 10870 Northwest 50th Street.

ARM found about 300 animals, including goats, sheep, cows, dogs and bird that were malnourished, sick and emaciated. Many were too weak to move on their own and some died within their enclosures.

ARM officials said Jones, a resident of Lee County, supplied animals to slaughter farms in Lee County. They also said animal sacrifices were conducted on the property.

The animals that could be saved were removed from the property and are being cared for by ARM.

Jones was being held on more than $250,000 bond Monday, jail records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
