‘Everybody's Devastated': Grief Counselors at School of Boy Killed in Shooting

The 6-year-old boy died after shooting himself with an unsecured firearm, police said

Grief counselors were at a Miami Gardens elementary school Monday that was attended by a 6-year-old boy who fatally shot himself with an unsecured firearm over the weekend.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was also at Rainbow Park Elementary to help start the healing for the boy's classmates and teachers.

"Everybody's devastated," Carvalho said. "We've traveled this sad road one time too many."

Police said the child's grandmother called 911 after the shooting happened at a home in the 21000 block of Northwest 27th Court Saturday. The boy was taken to the hospital, but later died.

Authorities are still trying to figure out how the boy got the gun.

At the school Monday, moms and dads said they were still in disbelief over the shooting.

"My heart goes out to the family, it really does," said Shell Brown, the parent of a third grader.

The boy who was killed has an older brother who hasn't gone back to school yet. Counselors will be ready to help him when he does.

"The community needs to rally, the community needs to step up, show up, speak up, and provide an embrace of safety around our kids," Carvalho said.
