Police are investigating after an elderly woman was found dead in a canal behind her Miami Gardens home Saturday afternoon.
Mildred Townsend, 75, was found floating face-down in the canal at 51 NE 204th Street, according to Miami Gardens Police.
Officials discovered the woman after emergency medical services was called to treat her husband, an elderly man in hospice care, who was sick.
When EMS arrived, the man noticed his wife was missing because she is usually the one that opens the door.
"EMS and the ill person went out to check and found the wife floating in the canal deceased," said Det. Michael Wright with Miami Gardens Police.
The husband, overcome with grief, was taken away by an ambulance. He was not identified by police.
Investigators have not yet determined how Townsend ended up in the canal.
