A 90-year-old man has completed his trip from Louisville to Siesta Key on a recumbent tricycle.
The Sarasota Herald Tribune reports Bert Blevens rode 930 miles from Kentucky through Tennessee, Georgia and Florida on the reclined trike. He did it all riding through back roads, side streets and parking lots because bikes like his aren't allowed on interstate highways.
The journey toke 21 days and Blevens was escorted first by his son and then his daughter, Beth Blandford.
Blandford said there were times she worried they wouldn't make it. Her father had slightly wounded his leg early on in the trip and there were steep foothills in Georgia and Tennessee. Swarms of lovebugs tormented them for miles.
"I wouldn't characterize it as 'fun,' but it was an amazing adventure that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world," she said.
Along the way, Blevens passed through small towns, did interviews on local television and stopped to take photos with bystanders. He was greeted by a party of family and friends who sprayed him with champagne when he arrived in Siesta Key. He said he felt great.
"I'm not as tired as I thought I'd be, but I might take a little rest," he said.
