Group to Count Homeless Youth in Miami

The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and The Miami Coalition for the Homeless are spearheading Thursday's effort to count homeless people between the ages 13 and 24 years old

Volunteers are fanning out across Miami-Dade County to tally the number of youth living on the street.

The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and The Miami Coalition for the Homeless are spearheading Thursday's effort to count homeless people between the ages 13 and 24 years old. Homeless youth can be difficult to find because they often keep a low profile.

The iCount includes a comprehensive outreach with young volunteers and social media, along with assistance from public school officials. A public service announcement campaign will also promote the youth count. Volunteers will canvas a dozen fixed locations where homeless youth are thought to reside. The iCount coincides with the county's bi-annual homeless count.

Advocates say understanding the extent of homelessness in Miami will allow them to deliver better services.
