Florida Mom Smoked Fake Pot, Fell Asleep in Van With Child in Backseat: Police

Philomena Melton, 23, was arrested Wednesday on charges of child neglect and possession of synthetic marijuana

A Florida mother was arrested after she smoked fake marijuana and fell asleep in her minivan at a gas station with her daughter in the back seat, police said.

Philomena Melton, 23, was arrested Wednesday on charges of child neglect and possession of synthetic marijuana following the incident at the Kangaroo Express at 3873 Southwest College Road in Ocala, according to an Ocala Police arrest report.

According to the report, an employee of the store saw Melton sleeping in her purple Plymouth minivan with the driver's door open and the 21-month-old child in the back seat.

The employee called police and when an officer arrived, he found Melton still sleeping inside with the baggie of fake pot on her lap, the report said.

It took the officer several minutes to wake Melton up, and when she realized she had been awoken by an officer, she stuffed the baggie in her purse, the report said.

Police arrested Melton and booked her into the Marion County jail where she was being held on $5,250 bond Friday, records showed. It was unknown whether she has an attorney.

Melton's daughter was placed in her father's custody, the report said.
