Fire officials are investigating an early-morning blaze that destroyed a Dania Beach family's home Thursday.
The fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at the home on Southwest 45th Court near 33rd Avenue.
Resident Jessica Gonzalez told NBC Miami a phone call from a neighbor is how she found out her duplex caught fire. She said the Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue found heavy damage from smoke and flames in the house, and that it looked to have started in her bedroom.
Gonzalez, who shares the home with boyfriend Rafael Figueroa and the couple’s two children, had been staying with family over the holidays, and were not home when the blaze broke out.
But almost everything they have was destroyed, they said.
"My kids stuff, my crib, my living room set, my whole bedroom set, all their toys," said Gonzalez.
The family is expecting its third child any day now, and had spent a lot of time readying their home.
"I'm painting it up a little bit getting it ready for the new baby and stuff," said Figueroa.
Figueroa said the power had been turned off several days ago, and doubts the fire was sparked by electricity.
The couple said their home had been broken into earlier this month, and wonder if the fire was set by the same person, or someone squatting in their home while they were away.
No one was injured in the fire.
